South Africa is at the epicentre of an AIDS pandemic. Women and children are being hit hardest. Each year, an estimated 70,000 babies are born HIV positive, the virus being passed from mother to child. A simple drug regimen can change that.
The documentary explores the realities of being pregnant and HIV positive in South Africa. We witness the mother’s courage. From the crisis of being diagnosed HIV positive, she takes charge of her life, doing everything in her power to prevent the transmission of their disease to her baby. We watch the anguish of the mother as she waits to hear if her efforts have been successful. Has she done enough? Has she saved her baby from the virus? We see a strong and triumphant mother proudly emerge with an HIV negative baby.
“I can do anything now. I have saved my baby.”
This video was developed to show in primary health clinics to encourage pregnant women to test for HIV, give mothers a visual journey of what to expect from the PMTCT process, and raise community awareness about the benefits of PMTCT.
We follow one mother's journey through PMTCT – from her experience of testing HIV positive to disclosing her status to family members to delivering her baby to testing her baby after completing the PMTCT regimen.
